The Transylvania Farmers Market (TFM) is seeking a part-time Market Manager to oversee the administration and management of our farmers market. TFM is a vibrant group of farmers, artisans, and food vendors looking for a dynamic, energetic, task-oriented individual with great people skills who can help lead our market into a prosperous future. The Market Manager works with and reports to the Market Committee and Board of Directors and is responsible for overseeing the financial, operational, and strategic success of the organization.
Primary duties include market day of events coordination and execution (every Saturday, year-round); leading marketing initiatives through social media; grant writing and reporting; fundraising; communicating with vendors, community partners, media, and the public; as well as outreach to local, state, and national agencies. The ideal candidate possesses excellent interpersonal skills, grant writing and reporting experience, a fluency with social media and computers, financial knowledge, management experience, excellent time-management skills, as well as the ability to self-direct and to lead a diverse organization. This sometimes challenging and physically demanding role requires a diverse skill set, flexibility, the ability to work independently, and a love for local agriculture.

- Update the market map each year and modify when needed.
- Regular market location management: working with the board on property agreements, equipment, permits & insurance, and leading regular maintenance and cleaning after the market each week.
- Prepare and distribute annual market policies and applications.
- Coordination of the annual vendor meeting.
- Weekly vendor communications, correspondence, and support.
- Weekly vendor layout on the market map and market day planning.
- Maintain the vendor list and ensure 75 (agricultural):25 (arts/crafts) balance.
- Promote vendors through market days and also through website, social media, and newsletter.
- Enforcement of market policies.
- Recruit vendors, answer questions from interested vendors, and verify potential vendor qualifications.
- Process new vendor applications and manage correspondence, handle inspections for new vendors, and manage the vendor waiting list.
- Report day-to-day market business to the Market Committee and keep the Board of Directors informed of overall market health, financials, and issues.
- Consult the Market Committee and Board of Directors on issues that arise.
- Keep both groups informed regularly on any pertinent issues.
- Coordinate meetings (virtual or via email) with the Market Committee and Board of Directors.
- Carry out the requests of the Market Committee and Board of Directors.
- Market day prep, coordination and management, and set up/tear down.
- Requires standing for extended periods and routinely lifting, carrying, and moving materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Plan and coordinate a variety of events, music, promotions, and attractions.
- Work with the Board Treasurer on the annual market budget (average annual budget of $50k) and ensure that the market is staying on track financially, with money in reserve and sufficient funds for future needs.
- In coordination with the Board Treasurer, identify and secure funding to meet all market needs via a variety of grants, sponsorships, and donations.
- Work with the Board Treasurer on grant writing and the management of all meetings, presentations, reports and outcomes (City of Brevard, Transylvania County, Pisgah Health Foundation, Dogwood Foundation, ASAP, MountainWise, NCDA, USDA, and others).
- Fundraising – newsletters, posts, and other outreach to raise money through customer donations and business sponsorships.
- Plan and implement all market programming.
- Manage the SNAP/EBT and Double SNAP programs at the market each Saturday with the help of a staff member.
- Manage the SNAP/EBT program outside of the market, including weekly reconciliation of tokens/payouts, monthly grant reporting and reimbursement requests to grant funders for the Double SNAP program, as well as coordinate all outreach to the community and organizations with SNAP/EBT clientele.
- Manage advertising, press releases, website, newsletter, social media, and online listings.
- Management includes sending weekly newsletter to customers, regular posts on social media, providing content for newspaper articles and other features on the market, annual ads for tourism publications, and keeping the market website updated.
- Coordinate graphic design work for the market including ads, programming promotions, social media posts and newsletter.
- Regularly take photos at the market that can be used in promotions.
- Maintain good community relations with various local organizations and entities and promote the market in outreach to those groups.
- Attend ASAP Farmers’ Market Summit and other relevant events.
- Represent the market when needed at various local community meetings/events (in person or via zoom): Heart of Brevard, Chamber of Commerce & Business After Hours, City of Brevard, Transylvania County, Get Set Transylvania, Blue Zones/Food & Nutrition Committee, ASAP, NC State, Blue Ridge Community College, Farmers Market Coalition, Extension Office, Sharing House, Think Local Transylvania, Family Place, TC Ag Advisory Board, RAFI, CFSA, NC Choices, Resourceful Communities, Faithful Families, TC Family Support Committee, Transylvania County Library, and State Farmers Market Managers Meetings.
- Management of employees and contractors including recruitment, interviews, and hiring.
- Manage schedules and activities for staff.
- Ensure that the market is adequately staffed and functioning well.
- Stayed apprised of any health issues, state mandates and announcements and how they would affect the market.
- Manage customer/public and press inquiries and requests.
- Administer and enforce policies and respond to any issues or grievances from customers, vendors, and employees during market hours and throughout the week.
- Track vendor attendance as required by the state along with other statistics that are beneficial to grant applications and reporting.
- Plan each market day, coordinate and implement any logistics, and ensure successful setup, operation, and tear down.
- Create, collect, and evaluate annual customer and vendor surveys.
